Chucky

Season 1 (2021). In Hackensack, New Jersey, 14-year-old Jake Wheeler buys a vintage Good Guy doll at a yard sale for one of his art sculptures. Jake is gay, and his father Lucas does not accept him. Lucas wrecks the art project, and Lexy Cross, his cousin Junior's girlfriend, bullies Jake at school. Andy Barclay calls Jake and warns him about the doll, but Jake just throws it away. Chucky turns up at the school talent show, forces Jake into a fake ventriloquist act and humiliates Lexy. Jake is suspended. When Lucas hits Jake during a fight about his sexuality, Chucky electrocutes Lucas. Jake moves in with his uncle Logan, aunt Bree and Junior. Chucky tells Jake that Lucas deserved it and starts pushing him to kill Lexy too.

Chucky kills the Wheelers' maid, Annie, and plays innocent. At a Halloween party Lexy dresses up as Jake's dead father, and Jake stops Chucky from killing her. Jake later tries to kill Lexy in the woods but can't go through with it. Lexy apologizes so Jake will give Chucky to her little sister Caroline, who is obsessed with the doll. At Lexy's secret party, Chucky stabs Oliver after mistaking him for Lexy and then traps Lexy as her house burns. Jake saves her. Classmate Devon Evans, who hosts a true crime podcast about Charles Lee Ray, figures out the truth, and Jake, Devon and Lexy team up. Chucky kills Detective Peyton at the hospital and flips the three of them off. Flashbacks show young Charles helping a killer murder his parents in 1965, killing a janitor at a boarding home in 1972 and meeting Tiffany in the 1980s.

The kids beat the burned doll in a trash can, but Chucky has already moved into Caroline's new Good Guy doll, Tommy, and leaves the principal's severed head on stage at a town meeting. Tiffany Valentine, still living as Jennifer Tilly, is keeping Nica Pierce in a hotel, where Chucky's soul fragment in Nica kills hostages. Tiffany has bought Charles's childhood home and ties Nica up there. Chucky throws Bree out a window, and it is ruled a suicide. Andy and Kyle, who have been hunting down the leftover Chuckys since Cult of Chucky, come to Hackensack. Chucky breaks Detective Kim Evans's neck on the stairs. At Bree's wake Tiffany kisses Logan, and Chucky convinces Junior that Logan's cheating drove Bree to her death, so Junior beats Logan to death with a doll.

In the finale Tiffany shows Chucky a truckload of Good Guy dolls ready to ship across the country and kill people. Tired of his abuse, she cuts his head off, then sets off a bomb meant for Andy and Kyle. At the town's Frankenstein screening, where Tiffany appears as celebrity guest Jennifer Tilly, a Chucky stabs guests including Nathan Cross. Junior turns on Chucky and is stabbed. Jake crushes Chucky's head and Junior dies in Lexy's arms. Andy survives, steals the truck and drives off, but the living Tiffany doll holds him at gunpoint. Tiffany cuts off Nica's arms and legs so Chucky can never use her body again, and a gloved hand rises at the Wheeler graves.

Season 2 (2022). Andy drives the truck off a cliff with the doll holding him hostage. Months later Jake lives with a foster family in Salem, New Jersey. A Chucky shows up at Lexy's house with a bomb and blows up himself and Jake's foster brother Gary. Blamed for Gary's death, Jake, Devon and Lexy are sent to the Catholic School of the Incarnate Lord, built on the site of the boarding home where Charles grew up. A scout Chucky arrives, scares a nun to death and photographs the kids. Jake tries to reform him with sensory overload and aversion therapy, and the doll turns docile and calls himself Good Chucky. A bigger, stronger Chucky kills a priest and Lexy's bully Trevor, and the kids hide the body. Tiffany kills a detective asking about Nica, then has to play Jennifer Tilly for her children Glen and Glenda and a surprise party with Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano, Sutton Stracke, Meg Tilly and Liv Morgan. Glenda kills the butler Jeeves, Glen helps Nica escape, and Nica gets away with Glenda and Kyle, who is still alive.

Good Chucky crucifies the evil one, and nun Sister Ruth decides the evil doll is a new messiah. Tiffany kills Meg Tilly when she learns the truth, and Tiffany and Glen burn the house down. Devon and Lexy find a cabin where a bald Chucky called The Colonel is torturing Andy with help from Dr. Mixter, Charles's childhood therapist. They free Andy. The Colonel poisons the evil Chucky with arsenic in the communion wafers, and Andy kills The Colonel. Good Chucky briefly snaps and pushes Lexy's roommate Nadine out a window. Dr. Mixter forces an exorcism on Good Chucky and a ritual to move Chucky Prime, the piece of Chucky in Nica, into the doll. The exorcism drives Chucky into Father Bryce, who explodes. Glenda kills Sister Ruth. Andy kills Chucky Prime, but Chucky had already swapped into Dr. Mixter's body, and from there he moves into a new doll. The real Jennifer Tilly, trapped in a doll, is hit by a truck. Glen is shot by Nica, and Tiffany saves the twins by putting both souls into the Glen/Glenda doll, now called G.G., and ships them to England.

At Christmas, Chucky kills Lexy's mother Michelle, and Lexy kills Chucky. Caroline, now fully under Chucky's influence, leaves with Tiffany and Tiffany's Belle doll. In New York, Tiffany tries to move her soul into the Belle doll and finds Chucky hiding inside it.

Season 3 (2023 to 2024). A year earlier, police stopped Chucky from killing Tiffany, who was arrested as Jennifer Tilly for Michelle's murder, and Chucky escaped with Caroline. His doll body is now aging. A voodoo expert, Dr. Rosen, tells him Damballa abandoned him after the exorcism, and he needs six sacrifices in an evil place to win the god back. After a failed try at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, he picks the White House. Posing as Henry Collins's doll Joseph, named after the President's son who died of cancer, he shoots Secret Service agent Teddy, kills secretary Samantha with a letter opener and kills Miss Fairchild. Jake, Devon, Lexy and Nica testify at Tiffany's trial, and she is sentenced to death. Jake, Devon and Lexy get into the White House Halloween party through Grant Collins. Chucky drops a chandelier that kills nanny Annie Gilpin and several guests, but the ritual fails again and he ages more. In prison Tiffany uses voodoo dolls to kill celebrity chef Evelyn Elliot and control a guard.

Dying, Chucky decides to go out as the greatest serial killer ever. He kills a housekeeper and President Collins, and agent Warren Pryce covers it up with a body double, Randall Jenkins. Chucky takes Randall to the Situation Room and aims nuclear missiles at Moscow, Pyongyang and the North Pole. Agent Coop shoots him in the heart and the doll crumbles to dust, but the North Pole missile has already launched and Charles Lee Ray's ghost now haunts the White House. During a seance, the ghost rains blood from the sprinklers and electrocutes parapsychologist Carol Lindstrom, press secretary Melanie and Vice President Rhodes. Randall drowns in an elevator filling with blood. To follow Chucky into the spirit realm, Jake takes a drug that stops his heart for five minutes.

In the series finale, Jake meets his father's ghost and they make peace. He finds all of Chucky's soul fragments watching his old murders in the White House theater and tells Good Chucky he has to sacrifice himself to make up for Nadine's death, but the others were stalling so Chucky could take over Jake's empty body. Tiffany escapes her execution. Pryce kills Hicks and blows up bombs in the White House, and Pryce burns in the Oval Office. Chucky, in Jake's body, kills Timmy Nash and leads the others to Wendell Wilkins, the man who created the Good Guy dolls, who has been keeping Caroline. Caroline moves Chucky into Wilkins's prototype Good Guy and Tiffany into a prototype Belle doll. Caroline drives off with both dolls. Nica wheels herself into Wilkins's house and finds that Jake, Devon and Lexy's souls have been put into marionettes as Wilkins comes up behind her. The cliffhanger was never resolved because the show was canceled.

Production

Don Mancini first talked publicly about a Chucky series in February 2018. On January 29, 2019, it was reported to be in development at Syfy with Mancini as creator and showrunner, and David Kirschner, Harley Peyton and Nick Antosca as executive producers. On January 11, 2020, at NBCUniversal's TCA winter press tour in Pasadena, Syfy announced a straight-to-series order with Universal Content Productions.

Mancini, who had worked on Hannibal, wanted to use television to reinvent the franchise. He made Jake a gay teenager with a father who does not accept him, drawing on his own adolescence, and called the show a coming of rage story. It picks up directly from Cult of Chucky. Mancini said he was allowed up to ten uses of the f-word per episode for Chucky and used the eight hours to answer fan questions like who Charles's first victim was and how he met Tiffany. He also said he worried the 2019 remake might lead the studio to drop his continuity had it been a hit.

Mancini told AssignmentX that he first pitched the show as returning legacy characters tormenting a new group of kids each season. During season 1 the team grew attached to Jake, Devon and Lexy and kept them.

The first teaser, on July 15, 2020, confirmed Brad Dourif as Chucky. He recorded his first lines at home, working remotely with Mancini. Between March and April 2021, Jennifer Tilly, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise and Fiona Dourif were confirmed. Fiona also plays adult Charles Lee Ray in flashbacks, with her voice replaced by Brad's so viewers would not confuse Charles with Nica-Chucky. Devon Sawa was cast as twins Lucas and Logan.

Filming was set for late 2020 but was pushed back by the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 1 shot in Toronto from March 29 to August 11, 2021, with the Square One parking lot in Mississauga as base camp. The series was renewed on November 29, 2021.

For season 2 Mancini drew on Catholic horror such as The Exorcist and The Omen and on his own Catholic upbringing, and brought back Glen and Glenda because queer fans had embraced them. Lachlan Watson was cast in June 2022. Mancini had met Watson on a 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel about transgender representation. Liv Morgan, a lifelong fan, asked to be written in. Season 2 shot in Toronto from April 20 to August 29, 2022. The crew canceled their San Diego Comic-Con 2022 appearance days before the panel.

Season 3 was renewed on January 15, 2023. Mancini had researched White House ghost stories for years and used the setting to dig deeper into the Damballa mythology. Filming began in Toronto on April 27, 2023. Knowing the actors' strike was coming, the crew focused on finishing the first four episodes, and filming stopped in mid-July when SAG-AFTRA struck. Mancini said episodes five and six were nearly done. Filming resumed November 24 and wrapped December 22, 2023, and the season aired in two halves.

Syfy and USA canceled the series on September 27, 2024. Mancini said he was heartbroken but grateful for three years, thanked fans for the #RenewChucky campaign and promised Chucky would return. Nerdist reported that talks about a shorter fourth season or a movie to wrap up the story did not work out.

Effects and makeup

Tony Gardner and Peter Chevako designed Chucky to look exactly like he did in Child's Play 2, since Mancini believes that sequel is the fan favorite.

Mancini said six or seven puppeteers performed Chucky and that practical puppetry covers 99.5 percent of the doll's actions. Digital effects erased the puppeteers, rods and cables. There were roughly two dolls for each kind of action, for talking, walking and harder shots. Teo Briones said his death scene used one doll for rough handling and another with a working mouth for close-ups. Jacob Breedon, a child, sometimes performed as a double in a suit.

For Chucky's bedridden old-age look in season 3, Mancini sent Gardner reference stills of the ghost woman from Mario Bava's Black Sabbath. He credited Gardner with building three separate stages of aging.

Special effects supervisor Josh Lacroix, a longtime Chucky fan, told the Television Academy that about 70 percent of the effects are practical, with visual effects added on top. His department handled rain, wind, snow, smoke and death effects, and a big scene could need two units of 15 to 20 technicians. Blood effects were planned with set decoration and wardrobe ahead of time.

For season 3 Lacroix built a pressurized pot system that could dump a huge bucket of blood through a garden hose in about two minutes, which was used to cover an entire room in blood. He came up with the pressure system after the season 2 chainsaw kill, and said the one note he kept hearing from above was more blood.

Each Glen and Glenda look took about an hour in hair and makeup. Watson shot one twin, changed, and then played the other against an earpiece playing their own recorded lines.

Props and costumes

Caroline's Belle doll in season 2 is based on the bride doll design from Bride of Chucky.

A Good Guys branded ice cream truck was displayed at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2021.

The season 2 poster shows Chucky on a golden throne covered in references to past films and the season's religious themes.

Wendell Wilkins keeps prototype Good Guy and Belle dolls, which become Chucky's and Tiffany's final bodies in the series finale.

Production

• Produced by UCP.
• Don Mancini: creator, writer, showrunner, executive producer; directed the series premiere.
• Chucky remained a practical puppet effect for principal character interaction.

The killers

Deaths

Joseph LoDuca composed the score, as he did for Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky. He read scripts ahead of time and scored after scenes were shot.

LoDuca used piano chords for Jake and Devon's relationship, since Devon plays piano in the first episode, and a detuned toy piano for Chucky's fake innocence. A new version of the Child's Play 2 theme plays in Chucky's scenes with Caroline. Tiffany gets a lush classic Hollywood vamp theme, and the 1980s flashbacks have a synth sound.

Licensed songs include music by Billie Eilish, Kim Petras, Electric Youth, The Go-Go's, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Shaed, Rob Zombie and Blue Oyster Cult.
